Samsung plans to test self-driving cars in California
Samsung has been given the go-ahead to test. autonomous vehicles in California alongside Silicon Valley rivals such as Apple and Alphabet.The regulatory move follows its $8bn acquisition of Harman International, an automotive supplier, which closed in March. The maker of Galaxy smartphones received permission to test self-driving cars in its native South Korea in May.Samsung first said it planned to work on autonomous cars in 2015. but it has said that it does not intend to build an entire vehicle of its own, instead focusing on becoming a supplier of software and sensors to other automotive companies.California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has now granted permits to 39 companies, ranging from traditional players in Detroit and Silicon Valley tech groups to small start-up teams. A DMV spokesperson said that Samsung’s permit, which was granted to its semiconductor division, covers three vehicles: a Toyota Prius and two Audi A3s.Samsung did not immediately have any comment on the permit.Earlier this month, it emerged that Apple plans to launch a self-driving shuttle bus for employees in Cupertino, as it continues to test and develop autonomous systems.
